BIO
Haron Mwangi is an accomplished Communication and Media expert, Scholar and Corporate leader, having worked as the CEO of the Media Council of Kenya ( MCK) and risen to the top management of Post Bank and Agricultural Finance Corporation. Haron has taught at graduate and postgraduate levels in various universities locally and abroad. He has taught as a tutorial fellow of the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa and a visiting scholar at the University of Rwanda and the United States International University in Kenya. He has equally examined both MA and PhD candidates in the Aga-Khan Graduate School, Daystar University in Kenya, Makerere University in Uganda and the University of Sierra Leone, West Africa.
Haron’s research interests are in media and society, particularly the intersection between media freedom, freedom of expression, access to information, democracy and governance. He has extensively researched media performance both as a business and social-political institution. He has explored public interest journalism, media viability and suitability and the question of how the best media today could respond to the emerging challenge of digitalization, misinformation and disinformation and the distinction between authentic and synthetic journalism.
He has distinguished himself as an authority in media polity, regulation and democracy, having consulted for governments and media institutions, civil society and international media support organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa. His most recent research work includes:
