MASTER OF ARTS IN THEORETICAL LINGUISTICS

M.A in Theoretical Linguistics offers postgraduate students an opportunity to spearhead research into linguistic phenomena manifested in language typology. Accordingly, the focus issues include but are not limited to the core models and theories of linguistics such as Generative grammar which has evolved through various stages to become the Minimalist Programme for linguistic inquiry, Functional Grammar, Systemic Functional Grammar, Scale and Category Grammar, among others.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify for admission into a Masters of Arts in Theoretical Linguistics, applicants shall be:

(i) Holders of at least a Bachelor’s degree Second Class Honours, Upper Division in either B.A in English, or B.ED of Arts in English from Maseno University.

(ii) Holders of a relevant Bachelor of Arts degree in English or Linguistics degree of any other recognized University.

(iii) In addition to the above, applicants must meet the specific requirements of the Masters degree programme as approved by Senate.

(iv) A duly registered candidate shall be required to pursue his/her programme of study within the stipulated duration, under instruction or supervision by academic staff approved by Senate.

PROGRAMME DURATION

The M.A degree programme in Theoretical Linguistics shall normally take two (2) academic years distributed over four semesters for full/part-time attendance shall not exceed a period of four calendar years from the date of registration.
