Admission Requirements

  1. Meet the minimum requirements for admission into degree programmes at Maseno University
  2. In addition, the candidates must have scored a minimum grade of C+ in the  Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations (KCSE) and  grades below in the following cluster subjects:

  1. One principal passes at A level in English or Kiswahili and a subsidiary in General paper all obtained in the same sitting.
  2. A relevant diploma from training institutions recognized by Maseno University senate.

 

Regulations on Credit Transfer 

Requests for credit transfer will be made in writing to the academic registrar through the Dean of School after admission on recommendations of the school board. Official transcripts from a recognized University must accompany such a request.

 

The course units on which exemptions are sought shall not exceed one third of the total units in that level.

 

Programme Duration

 

The programme shall normally run for a minimum period of four (4) academic years, with years I, II, IV comprising two semesters each.

 

Programme Structure

The program offers courses within the degree structure spelled out by the School.

  1. The Department offers courses in terms of units as defined by the School.
  2. There shall be CORE (C), ELECTIVE (E) and REQUIRED (R) courses. Core courses are mandatory, while Elective and Required courses may be chosen by students as preferred in fulfilling the full-time load requirement. Required courses are taken from other departments.
  3. In the first year, students will be required to take SIX courses from Communication and Media Technology Department and at least EIGHT courses from other programs/departments in the University.  
  4. In the second year, students will be expected to take EIGHT media courses and EIGHT courses from other programs/departments in the University.  
  5. In the third and fourth years students shall take at least TEN Units from the Communication and Media Technology Department and at least SIX courses from other programs/departments in the University.  
  6. The department of Communication and Media Technology shall from time to time specify courses to be taken in other programs/department.
  7. There shall be an industrial attachment at the end of fourth year running continuously for three months for students in their respective areas of interest and specialization. 
  8. With the guidance of the lecturer concerned, students shall contribute to and manage in-house publications and production to sharpen their skills in print and electronic media, Photojournalism, Public Relations and Advertising.

 

EXAMINATIONS

Common University examination regulations shall apply. However:

  1. Each course taught during the semester shall be assessed at the end of the semester.
  2. Continuous Assessment Tests (CATS) and final semester examinations shall constitute 30% and 70% respectively.
  3. During their Industrial attachment (AMT 419), students shall be assessed at least twice by two different University academic staff using special assessment forms. The attachment course shall be graded as follows:
  1. On field assessment 70%
  2. Students Field Report 30%

e.    Courses which are exclusively practical like AMT 212, AMT 401, AMT 411 and AMT 412, shall be graded out of 100%. However, for AMT 401 and 412, a special Board of Examiners constituted by the department comprising departmental lecturers will assess the practical. A Viva Voce shall be held between the Board of Examiners and the candidate where the supervisor will himself/herself present the candidate(s). 

 

Grading System

Grading system of courses and degree classification shall be the same as those contained in section 5.3 of the common rules and regulations for undergraduate examinations of Maseno University.  

 

Graduation Requirements/Classification of Degrees

Unless exempted by Senate, degrees shall be classified into First Class Honours, Second Class Honours (Upper Division), Second Class Honours (Lower Division) and Pass. The Degree shall be graded as follows.

Certification

Graduates of this programme will be awarded a Bachelor of Communication and Media with either of these specializations (Public Relations, Electronic Media or Print Media) of Maseno University.
