Fine art is a human ability to transform an idea into a form. The form so created is skillfully articulated to satisfy aesthetic or utilitarian factions. This course contributes immensely in all areas of the society such as social, cultural, economic, political, historical, utilitarian and personal expression. This programme provides an opportunity to students to engage with a contemporary approach to traditional media; have an exploration of textile in fine art context; digital media in the form of still motion images; interdisciplinary practice that cuts across the boundaries of traditional media; contextual research in contemporary artistic practice; visual research that promotes exploration and speculation; art criticism and the development of analytical and interpretive thinking. The aim of the course is the achievement of authentic, personal approach to art making, relevant contemporary art and discourse in preparation for a chosen career in the visual art industry.

Interior Design transforms built environments into functional and habitable spaces. The focus of the Programme is to enhance the quality of life through the designing interior spaces and the extended environment. Skills that transform interior spaces into effective settings for various human activities are gained. Emphasis is on the development of technical skills, creative problem solving and management skills. Interior Designers are tasked with enhancing the aesthetic value of spaces based on the organization of principles and elements of design. The program mentors individuals to fit in the World of Work after the attainment of techniques and skills which enable them become professionals in design consultancy, program management, space planning, display design, drafting and furniture design.

Fashion is the prevailing style or groups of styles in clothing and accessories worn by a large group of people at a given time.  In addition, fashion is a social problem.  Hence, fashion is influenced by contemporary art forms like music and other art movements, cultural and social latitudes and varies over time and place. Fashion designers work individually or as a team in designing clothing and accessories.  Designers attempt to satisfy consumers’ desire for functionally and aesthetically acceptable clothing while anticipating changing consumer tastes and desire for newness. The designers must consider the clientele and the occasion.  Fashion designers have a wide range of materials, colours, patterns and styles to work with. Designing apparel and textiles requires competency in artistic and scientific techniques.

These programmse give opportunity to the many people who have talent and interest in either Textile and Fashion Design, Interior Design or Fine art and have not attained the basic university entry requirement to study the subject. In addition the programmes offer those who have certificate in any of the three an opportunity to further their knowledge and skills. The programmes provide a window of opportunity for learners to realize their dream of attaining a degree in their  area of interest through value addition of content.  The Department of Art & and Design therefore offers Diploma courses in the three areas leading to the award of Maseno University Diploma. Upon successful completion learners may progress to the degree level.
