Masters in Communication and Media

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

i.    The common admission requirements of the Maseno University School of Graduate studies for Master’s Degree Programme shall apply.

ii.    A B.A in Communication and Media studies from a recognized university.

iii.    A first or higher degree in any discipline of the Natural Sciences; Social Sciences or Humanities from a recognized university

iv.    A first degree and a graduate diploma in Communication and Media


 

PROGRAMME DURATION

The M.A degree programme in Media Studies shall take a minimum of two years for full time students and a maximum of four years for part time students.   

 

 

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

 

The curriculum comprises of a two-year programme covering four semesters, leading to the award of the Master of Arts in Media Studies degree through project or thesis. Those who opt for a project shall undertake a third semester of study. The third semester consists of courses which are skills based as opposed to the first and second semester courses. Courses are offered in units, where a unit is a one-hour lecture per week per semester, two hours of tutorials or three hours of practical per week per semester. For those pursuing project a three semester schedule will be offered to those who do not have media based first degrees. Those pursuing this option will undertake a project.

 

EXAMINATIONS

i.    The common Maseno University examination regulation shall apply

ii.    Examination of all courses taken shall be taken at the end of the semester.

iii.    Taught courses shall be assessed by a one three-hour paper constituting of 60%, while the remaining 40% of the marks will be drawn from the Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs)

iv.    The pass mark for courses done is 50%

v.    The research component shall be undertaken through a supervised research project.  This will be written up as a dissertation.

vi.    Post Graduate examination rules of the School of Graduate Studies shall apply for project and thesis examination.
